Phosphorus (P) fertilization of apple orchards (Malus x domestica Borkh) has
received much less attention than nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) fertilization. The
aim of this research was to evaluate the effects of orchard fertilization with increasing
rates of P on some fruit quality attributes of ?Fuji? apple. The experiment was
conducted in São Joaquim, State of Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil, from 2010 to
2013, in a Inceptisol. Initial analyses indicated 4.8% of organic matter, 47% of clay
content, pHH2O of 6.4 and 4.3 mg kg-1 of P. Annual fertilizer rates of 0, 40, 80, 120
and 160 kg ha-1 of P2O5 (as triple superphosphate) were applied to the soil surface,
without incorporation, in a 2.2-m-wide strip centered on the tree row. The experiment
followed a randomized block design, with five replicates. In 2013, fifteen days prior
commercial harvesting, fruit were collected from each treatment and assessed for
maturity and quality, at harvest and after six months of controlled atmosphere (CA)
cold storage. At harvest, fruit were assessed for total soluble solid content (TSS),
titratable acidity (TA), flesh firmness, starch index and skin color, and after CA
storage, for TSS, TA and flesh firmness. At harvest, there was a significant increase
of starch index (advanced starch conversion to soluble sugars) and flesh firmness,
and reduction of red color intensity on the sun exposed side of the fruit with the
increment of P fertilization rate. However, after six months in CA storage, there was
no effect of P rate on flesh firmness. MenosPhosphorus (P) fertilization of apple orchards (Malus x domestica Borkh) has
